In Michigan and many other states the auto insurance companies must participate in a "high-risk" pool. That means they must each accept a certain number of high-risk drivers that they would otherwise choose not to insure at all. They are allowed to charge significantly more for these drivers than drivers with good records. This is the auto insurance equivalent of the "pre-existing condition". But instead of arranging a "pre-exisitng condition pool" to address that health care issues the statists reflexively insist that the only solution is a top-down government owned single payer system that covers everything from a mosquito bite to elective trans-gender surgery.

Ever heard of Dahlia Lithwick? No? Don’t feel bad. I hadn’t either until I read her piece of … something or other … on Slate about the Supreme Court hearing this week on Obamacare.

A quick Google search turned up her Wikipedia entry, which tells me she’s a Canadian and contributing editor at Newsweek and senior editor at Slate. In other words, a committed leftist.
