I believe the crisis brewing called the fiscal cliff was part the democrat plan from the day they took complete control of the govt. in Jan. of 2009. Most of the legislation included future dates for implementation to coincide with the election cycle. The no budget for 4 years was also part of the plan from day one, it was not republican obstructions that blocked the budget process, it was the democrat majority in both houses that could and did pass anything they wanted. The flaw in their plan was they thought the American economy was so strong that it would recover despite their economic policies of wild spending and monstrous debt and deficits. Keynesianism failed as it always has yet it caught them by surprise.

Then there was the Propaganda Minisrty ( MSM ) who did a good job "talking down the economy" while demagoging Bush ( on some issues he needed a swift kick ) for eight years. Guess what?
