doug you're quite right about wind turbines but even for a small one for running an average size house costs about 45,000 dollars . most people cannot afford this. the wind farms are far from cost effective due to the huge cost for the gens and turbine housings. all of which consume vast amounts of resources to produce. all the wind turbines in kalifornia do not generate the same amout of power that one medium size hydro electric dam on one of the wild rivers that are protected for the enjoyment of river rafters.
