This is good advise. I work as a financial aid counselor at a public college. Our students are getting a good, well rounded, liberal arts education, but a good liberal arts education is not vocational training. A college education is not supposed to lead to a specific job. It is supposed to make you a better citizen, who can think clearly. We need some of these very smart graduates to run businesses doing things we need to be done.

Dave, as a financial aid administrator I agree with you. $50,000 in assets will not make a significant, if any, difference in the amount of scholarship the students will receive. The much bigger issue is the parent's income, the size of the parent's household and the number of members of the household in college. Moving assets in an attempt to maximize eligibility for financial aid often costs parents much more then they receive in financial aid.

I work at a public university. We promote several scholarships for students who are from specific nations. We are not allowed to say that though. Instead we say that "preference" for awarding the scholarship will be given to students from those nations. This one word, it seems, makes the discrimination alright. Mr. Orwell was a genius.

Which reminds me of the issue of braile keys on the drive thu ATM machines at the bank. While useless, they comply with the law.
