Illegal Immigration Reform to Get Some Time for Debate

What sort of idiot would be a Republican yet support a bill that grants legal status *before* the border is objectively effectively secured? What do they think is going to happen when they give the base the finger like this and millions of future Democrats an expedited process? Immigration is one of the concrete, easily grasped issues that carries a lot of emotional power, along with guns and taxes. Why would any Republican mess with that? They need to do the right thing, and the right thing is not to jeopardize the entire country by granting amnesty without putting some controls in place to ensure the country doesn't go Democrat in the coming years, which it will because Obama has three years to circumvent the green card provision.

The answer to your question I believe is someone like McCain . If it were not for the pressure applied by the senators threatening filibuster McCain would have walked right into another one way bill. To me the entire filibuster was about forcing Reid to allow all amendments to be discussed and not just the ones he likes, which is his history. McCain is either incapable of learning from previous mistakes or doesn't cares only to be on one TV show after another . Gang of 8, Gang of 7 , whatever his new Gang of (?) is a ridiculous ploy for doing just that. There are 100 senators and since when did they all not have the same influence on making our laws and out in full view of the public not behind closed doors .

There is absolutely no duty of Americans to self-sacrifice for the freedom of foreigners. Yes, it would be great if we could open up everything, but we simply cannot at this time. 139 million people want to come here, including 5 million from Mexico and 19 million Chinese. Figure that >60% will vote Democrat. It would be a catastrophe if we took the unconditional open borders principle to its logical conclusion; instant decline. People preaching that have an evil, nihilistic, anti-self-interest morality whether they realize it or not. Lawmakers need to respect this reality and start freeing up the *American* economy, including abolishing the welfare/entitlement state, before they look to grant more freedom to foreigners. Then we talk.

According to POLITICO, the Gang of 8 is expected to release their illegal immigration reform plan as soon as Thursday with mark-ups beginning the first week of May. This gives at least some time for debate on the issue, which has been in question since Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy has indicated no plans to slow down the process. Regardless, Leahy plans to hold just one hearing on the new legislation.

The Senate’s immigration Gang of Eight plans to announce a deal within a week but a committee markup is not expected until at least...
