Banning abortion will not create the wealth required to sustain human life. It can only move reproduction up in the schedule. It cannot increase overall levels. Once the kids, desired or not, are born, it takes money from somewhere in the economy to raise them. Even if you could force women to have kids, you cannot wave a magic wand and make the resources to feed this new population appear. If you could force the population to increase, unless you could also cause more economic growth, the result would be mass deaths. People have gotten spoiled and forgotten the connection between money and survival. Let me assure you, despite the abundance produced by the Industrial Revolution, it is still there. The laws of nature are still in effect.

Through most of our history, this assumption has proved to be correct. These days, not so much.

Last week, the Commerce Department announced that the gross domestic product shrunk by 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012. And the Census Bureau reported that the U.S. birth rate in 2011 was 63.2 per 1,000 women age 15 to 44, the lowest ever recorded.

Slow economic growth and low population growth threaten to undermine entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare....
