The problem is not with "evangelical Christianity" as they do not typically make "the sign of the cross." However, the broader statement that (paraphrased) that "God does not take sides," is not the point. He DOES care about everything in our lives, and that is why we are encoruaged in the Bible to pray about everything. In terms of who wins a football game etc., you are correct, this does not have any eternal significance. However, in terms of how our lives are affected, and how our faith grows as we mature in it, He cares very much. Remember there are those on the other team praying also. This makes perfect sense, otherwise why pray about anything?
