Did you know that in Connecticut it is legal for teachers to be armed, if the school system permits it? Do you think the principal at Sandy Hook would have used a pistol if one had been available? If your contention is that teachers are there to teach, not act as police, consider this. Teachers are not firefighters, but every one is trained to use any available fire fighting equipment, such as fire extinguishers. Before you say that teachers SHOULD NOT be armed, go out and ask the teachers. Ask them if they feel that throwing their bodies between their students and a madman is their first choice. Find out how many of them are already capable and licensed to carry firearms, and are only prevented from doing so by current ideology

Good point, I had rather be armed and have a chance to defend myself and others than stand and take hot lead. At least you have a fighting chance to Blow his Head OFF.

Indeed, as the Clackamas (Oregon) Mall shooter (noted by Michelle) reacted when confronted by an armed citizen -- by killing himself -- the armed protector may not even need to shoot!

Having armed teachers (and other school employees)is like having plainclothes police scattered all around the school,at no cost. it's the smart thing to do.
it's also a DETERRENT,because these mass murderers SEEK OUT "gun-free zones" such as schools. If it's known that schools have armed people, the murderers will avoid them,as the Aurora murderer did;he bypassed theaters closer to him for the one that was "gun-free".

A popular misconception is that teachers or other school employees are a "worse threat" to the students (that is REALLY irrational) and ineffective against an armed intruder. That is untrue. Any armed school person would have to have a concealed carry permit, and permit holders have proven themselves to be safe and law-abiding,in EVERY US state that issues the permits. There's no reason or evidence to believe that permit holders would act any different on school grounds than they do in other public places. There's no evidence that a permittee would shoot an innocent, that just has not happened (by a permit holder) in real life, after decades of CC and thousands of defensive gun uses.

... And, you can get off of the mindset that says a teacher would have to be a highly-trained firearms expert in order to be effective.

You would be amazed to know how many active duty cops are lousy pistol shots, yet you would blindly accept any policeman as a suitable 'guard' in a school.

On the other hand, simply hearing a shot or a siren is enough to kick these 'mass shooters' into self-destruct mode.

Any teacher competent enough to take off the safety and trigger a few rounds in the general direction of an attacker is (probably) doing as good a job as the average cop.
The presence of 'armed resistance' will most likely end the confrontation with the intruder killing himself.
BUT ... if the teacher DOES happen to hit the...

... perp badly enough to disable him ...

Maybe we can discover through questioning which anti-gun organization is behind setting him up to commit this crime.
These simple common-sense steps are adapted from a post I published on my blog after the horrific Newtown, Conn., massacre. Our hearts ache, but we are not completely helpless or hopeless in the face of evil and the unknown. And we are not alone. This Christmas, cherish life, keep faith and practice self-empowerment.

7. Teach our kids about the acts of heroes in times of crisis. Tell them about Newtown teacher Vicki Soto's self-sacrifice and bravery. Tell them about Clackamas mall shopper Nick Meli, a concealed-carry permit-holder whose quick action may have prevented additional deaths. Tell them about Family Research Council security...
