First, semi-automatic is defined by how fast one can pull a trigger. Ergo, most weapons available for purchase are semi-automatic, even revolvers. Second, any object can be an assault weapon; A baseball bat wielded with a certain intent becomes an assault weapon. Don't have a battle axe at your disposal for the gang fight you're attending this weekend? No problem, just bring your trusty hammer - now you have an assault weapon. So when talking about weapons, it might help if everyone actually understands the context of that word. What do you call the butcher knife wielded to fend off the home intruder?

In a conversation with a friend one day at work, to illustrate the asininity of the company "no weapons" policy in a factory where we are surrounded by potentially dangerous objects, I took out my thread snips (see this image: http://image.ec21.com/image/finixshears/oimg_GC04023564_CA04023903/Thread_Cutters_Thread_Snips_Sewing_Cutters_Sewing_Scissors_Embroidery_Scissors.jpg), popped them open the way the mechanics do to sharpen them, and held them in my fist with a blade sticking out each side.

Since we keep the blades razor sharp it could be quite deadly in malicious hands.

The tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, has led to a lot of unfortunate misinformation about firearms. Let's try to add some facts to the justified emotion.

Are Some Guns More Dangerous than Others? The shooter in Aurora had three firearms when he entered the theater: a pump action shotgun, a semiautomatic rifle and a semiautomatic handgun.

In a closed, crowded setting like a movie theater, the shotgun was probably the most lethal of the three. Every shotgun shell can spray a half-dozen or more pellets, each capable of killing or maiming a person. Twelve-gauge shotguns often fire five shells, and...
