As someone who was once active in the AMA I found that the leadership consisted of physicians who could afford to spend a lot of time in Washington i.e. those who worked tor universities or were part of big corporate practices subsidizing their involvement. This group favored National Health Care from the start despite opposition from physicians in general. Over the years, they alienated the profession leading to a huge fall in membership. In the absence of dues money, the organization became totally dependent of government money and lost whatever independence it ever had. Who pays the piper calls the tune. They speak for government not physicians.
