formaldehyde, the reason the katrina victims turned their noses up at the fema trailers. in the 50s and 60s and probably even the 70s trailers reeked of formaldehyde, because its being used as an ingredient in the adhesives used to put the carpets down and for laminating the paneling. but no one complained and everyone managed and survived. in fact aspartame used in diet drinks is a derivative of formaldehyde. but you get certain demographics, they are always looking for a fight, the poor me attitude. but this applies to katrina. for the northeast i am surprised that fema is taking such a passive role. there hasn't been any news on what they have been doing, other than mr. norris's account here describing these tent cities.
