kids in the 50s and into the 60s could easily buy hostess cupcakes at 10 cents, and even when they went up to 12 cents. what was another 2 cents? or for 15 cents they could buy a mcdonald's hamburger. when the ice cream man came down the street there was another tug on the allowance, unless the kids was smart enough to burst in and say, mom, i need 10 cents! the ice cream man is coming! and she might quickly give him the money before saying, wait a minute. ice cream bars were 10 cents while popsicles and fudgesicles were 5 cents. for all of these products, only the hostess ones have jumped up in price so much they lost the kid market. cupcakes at $1.50 are at a 15 x multiple while the other items are all priced less than a dollar.

I can't believe we used to eat that stuff. But I loved the 19 cent burgers (Herfys had an entry level burger at 15 cents but I recall McDs @ 19 cents. And the ice cream truck on a hot day. Yup, 5 and 10 cents. Got off the Hostess junk pretty early and I still don't know what that rubber chocolate on the top of the cupcakes really was. It can't be good for you. But I still wish burgers were 19c. But McDs dollar menu is is a good deal. Buy a couple of those and take em home and put a slice of fresh onion in em. Yum!

kids was, sorry. also i forgot to mention candy bars. they were 5 cents back decades ago but now still are less than a dollar and are beefier. only hostess prices have broken past one dollar, leaving behind the little debbie and mickey's off brands.

Twinkies selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay. Union membership dropping steadily over the last decade.

Sound unrelated? They shouldn’t. The fate of the popular sponge cake was in the hands of the unionized men and women who work for Hostess Brands.

Or perhaps I should say “worked” -- past tense. Because a union-backed strike has killed what the Great Depression couldn’t. Hostess announced recently that they are suspending operations and will be laying off more than 18,000 employees. (Both sides had subsequently agreed to a mediation, but a judge ordered the bankruptcy to proceed.)
