i don't think postal workers are unskilled and anyway they aren't fed. postal carriers have to know their routes intimately so that as they sort the mail into their cases it's in the right order. otherwise it would be back and forth, back and forth as they come across mail that is out of order. they have to know 1000s of addresses and zip codes if they work in the back room, and they have to work accurately at the highest speeds because if they slack off, yet another mountain of mail will be descending with the next pickup round. this one guy at work took their civil service exam and he frankly said he couldn't cut it.

uvuv I guess that is why our mail is put here and there and we have to sort it ourselves and put it back in mail drop so it can be put in right box. Now you have explained it all to me why our mail is so late getting to us.Its all this stuff they have to remember.

I've been at the PO for almost 30 years. uvuvuv's description sounds like something out of the union's "puff our egos" handbook. You do not need to bring any particular skillset to almost all jobs at the PO. You will be trained on carrier routes as well as sorting machines and cases. No one needs to know 1000s of addresses and zipcodes - all false.
There are very few jobs that I could not train an 8-year old to do.
There is much truth to the number of people who get away with standing around, while the work is routinely performed by about 1/2 of the employees.

Federal employees are overpaid and underworked (probably a good thing), but a tear-jerker in today’s Washington Post reports that “job satisfaction across the government has hit its lowest point in almost a decade”:

It’s no secret that federal workers are feeling worn down. They’ve had their salaries frozen and are at the center of a partisan debate over the value of their work. A report due out Thursday, based on the largest sample ever of the workforce of 2 million, confirms a steady decline in morale...
