"...the shotgun effect would cover us with radioactive fallout." Not to mention that it may turn one dangerous falling object into many. In the case of a big iron asteroid, many of the pieces will be big enough to be catastrophic on their own. Any chance at damage containment goes right out the window.

Most "literary traditions" don't necessarily strive for accuracy, but all those that do have a record of increasing it. Compare Michelangelo's sculpture to Greco-Roman, or Renaissance painting to Byzantine. The realism only increases. Consider three-point perspective.

Wrong standard; science has a record of increasing accuracy, UNIQUE among literary traditions.

I think the blob came early and landed in DC.

OH SURE!!
We should believe and trust those people that have been wrong more times than right in history.

Not according to physics ... if the asteroid stayed solid, it would be pushed to a slightly different orbit, enough to miss us. If shattered into pieces, those would also be pushed into an orbit that misses us ... there is no difference!

Also might let the Blob out of the center of the asteroid.

With science today largely funded by government, you knew it wouldn‘t be long before the recent asteroid encounter in Chelyabinsk, Russia would lead to well-meaning, but mostly hysterical cries that we MUST DO SOMETHING about it;  “something” that costs a lot of money; “something” that involves thick scientific studies; and- the best part- “something” that promises no results for the fifty-to-a-hundred thousand years of program costs, run by the central and federal  government of the US-of-A.

If we don’t do “something,” NOW they’ll say, we’ll risk plague, locusts, drought and the usual assortment of frogs lets loose by the...
