Read the rest of that paragraph. He denies there were cars and SUVs, but then blames coal burning plants and pieplines (which were also lacking in the Middle Ages). It is obviously a joke. (Whether or not it was a good one is a matter of taste.) Please read the entire response before replying; knee-jerk reactions tend to make you look foolish, not the original writer. (I speak from the experience of having one of my essays posted here and getting terribly negative responses based on the first two sentences, almost entirely arguments which I rebutted later in the essay, an essay which no one bothered to read after getting absurdly enraged by my opening paragraph.)
