Can electricity from gas be generated at the point of extraction, so that rather than gas lines exporting the product from the gas fields, you'd have electrical lines feeding the electrical grid?
How feasible is that?
I don't think gas needs the extensive purification process that crude oil does. But you see these red flames burning off the gas at oil pumps. Why not use the gas to power a combustion engine to turn the pump, for example? It must not make economic sense, but I don't know the details.
