I'm a Conservative and a patriot. I read the ball turret story in school back in the 50's or 60's. Ity accurately depicted the impact of war on an ordinary soldier and was taught in cotext with other things on wghy the war became necessary. I think it is despicable that we deliberately bombed civilians in WWII- Dresden, Hiroshima wetre justa couple of horrible examples. Did it savbe American lives? Sure. So would gassing the entire population, but that's also illegal per conventions we signed. That being said, my father was a USMC Iwo Jima wounded vet and he wished the bomb had been dropped sooner so he didn't have to go there.
