Your post just below is more than a little naive....the signers of the Declaration Of Independence were often slave owners. They were alluding to freedom from a king and governance from England.
Really, it was little different from when the south later seceded, which was why Jefferson Davis was not found guilty of treason-- the Supreme Court held that the states had clearly envisioned the right to leave the union, as it was they who created the union and given it LIMITED powers, not the other way around. Several of the New England states, e.g., seriously considered secession in the 1820's over tariffs which impacted them.
