Thank you for that insight into the human condition--of your mother, a human. I understand how important willingness to improve is in determining medical outcomes. Having survived coronary artery by-pass graft surgery (thinking about what is done to a body--specifically, what was done to *my* body--during such surgery makes me shudder), I know the only reason I'm not still sitting at home in pajamas fretting about every little thing is the willingness I had--and still have--to improve. Cardiac rehab sessions 3 times a week, staying active even during the otherwise sedentary hours of work, and faith that God is strengthening me, are the keys.
