Esther Perel, a NYC based psychotherapist, and definitely no conservative, wrote about what she perceived to be the potential fallout of the hook-up culture among young college students in her book "Mating in Captivity." In one of the chapters of that book, she speculates that this hook-up culture may very well contribute to a lot of people having trouble with healthy emotional and sexual intimacy within a marriage years later. I think that the hook up culture leads to a devaluing of sex in a lot of ways, reducing it to a form of recreation and exchange of bodily fluids. We may not see the true fall out of this until years in the future, but it is sad that so many of our young people could not have a more healthy paradigm for something so important in life as sexual expression.
