1972-before the oil embargo I read an article about the US auto industry. One line that stuck for years "The last innovation in the industry was the automatic transmission in 1939." This was before foreign competition caught their attention. I went car shopping in 1972. One dealer was selling a 1968 Sedan de Vile and a 1968 Volkswagen Bug. Both were the same price. Probably there was more to the story, but still!
