Just wanted to let you know that there are school administrators out there that also think this kind of thing is ridiculous. My husband is a school principal of grades K through 12. He has to deal with things that come up all the time. The students that are disciplined are the ones that carry real weapons. If a student comes to the office and reports that they accidentally brought one - he helps them take care of it until they can get it safely home. We recently had a student threaten another student with a knife. That one had to be dealt with on a different level of course. Toy guns, toy knives, etc are not a danger to anyone. I often bring his attention to stories like this and he is as appalled as I am at the over the top ridiculousness of it. Our school doesn't have a zero tolerance policy so that gives him more latitude to handle situations in a way that is good for the student instead of having to hand out a crazy punishment that only makes everyone mad and hurts the student.
