But even unfettered capitalism is still better than any other means ever devised for lifting the poor out of poverty. Workers in Bangladesh *compete* for those $1.50/day jobs because it's better than what they had before (i.e. starvation). Their children will be better off as a result, and the country as a whole better off in a generation.
Free trade is one of the earliest and most basic expressions of the *most* important individual liberty: free association. Tariffs are ultimately the enemy of free association. They artificially dampen our own competitive fitness, and they doom the people of backwards countries like Bangladesh to an eternity of grinding...
