One political difficulty we face is demonization by the left of those who express their horror at uncivilized behavior as religious fanaticism. This straw man argument should not be allowed to survive for a second.
This country has ALWAYS allowed religious diversity, from its very inception. Read the letter from George Washington to the Touro Synagogue in Newport, RI. And its tolerance has implicitly always included atheism.
But what we have lost, as Ms Parker so eloquently points out, is our very sensitivity about grotesque butchery. We've lost the reverence for life that set apart West from East. We've lost the civilized nature that provided a role model for the world and defined us as "the last best hope of earth."
