Even before the development of the firearm, back when edged weapons were pretty much the epitome of hand-held self-defense for the individual, people did not walk around with a shield to convey their ability to defend themselves. They carried a large edged weapon. Freedom from attack is not a shield. Freedom is a sword. The intent of the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights, refers to a firearm at least equal to that carried by a soldier of an invading, would-be dictator. Nothing is mentioned about burglars or grouse hunting. To allow government to decide what a decent citizen may own, is to allow government to decide what a decent citizen is. No farther. Laws against harming others already exist. No farther. Keep your powder dry.
