Reasons to support the death penalty – ericynot is wrong on all six points
1) The death penalty is only incidentally about public safety. It is primarily about justice. The person who takes a life has forfeited his right to retain his own life.
2) Jesus’ statements were directed to individuals, not governments. Individuals should not take the law into their own hands. The hands of governments are not similarly restrained. Jesus is the God of the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. In the Old Testament we are specifically told that murderers should be executed. This command was pre-Mosaic law and is applicable to all mankind. It is not to be confused with ceremonial laws which were superseded in the New Testament.
