Charles (or should I call you Mr. Hammer?)
You are extremely correct! Back in 1974, when I got a full 4 yr. NROTC scholarship to USC, in the summer between high school, and starting USC, a VP from AT&T (still the monolopy phone company then) called me to have coffee. His whole spiel was once I had a USC degree, and got out of the Navy, I would never have to worry about a job.
It seemed kind of smarmy to me, even as a 17 yr. old. Luckily, I eventually declined the scholarship and my parents paid the $95/semester for Cal State Long Beach. Almost 40 yrs. later, I don't think I made a bad decision.
