Jackie Robinson may have been a Republican during his baseball career, but his experience with the new breed of Republicans, those who encountered during Barry Goldwater's 1964 campaign and that year's convention, convinced him that the Republicans Party was not for him. In his biography, he wrote that the party was being taken over by right-wing extremists, and compared his feelings watching them take over the party to Jews watching the Nazis take over Germany. He loathed the far-right Republican model and the extremism Goldwater and his ilk supported. He would certainly not support the Republican Party today.
