The divorce rate is down because the marriage rate is down, duh. In 1960 72% of the adult population was married and 15% had never been married. In 2010 51% of the adult population were married and 28% had never been. The percentage widowed declined by a third, and the percentage who have been divorced nearly tripled. The divorce rate per 1000 population is utterly meaningless without knowing the marriage rate.
