While a few (less than 15) cities benefit from large infrastructure in "downtown" areas the remainder of the country is diversified and the trend is away from large metro concentrations.Those cities are primarilly in the Northeast and are hopelessly crowded and horribly expensive due to space constraints. It is an old model that was formulated to support the 19th century American dream. High speed rail in Europe works due to the high density of ridership and the short haul between population centers...period. And, it's not for everyone. High speed rail is simply the province of the well heeled business traveler.
