As Schlafly writes that "we can't expect the authors to take blame for their disastrous election loss", we shouldn't expect Schlafly to either. The "tragic mistakes" were by Murdock and Akin speaking on the social conservative's favorite issue: abortion, and rape.
Social conservatives like Schlafly, share something in common with liberals. Both want to use government to enforce their virtues on others - it's just a different set of virtues from the social conservatives and from the liberals. Virtues like not gambling, no hateful speech, no flag burning, schools will educate your children about sex and homosexuality in the first grade, no big sugary drinks, etc. Issues where what you do harms no one except possibly yourself.
