As if there aren't still pictures available on the internet of Rumsfeld and Hussein meeting in Baghdad. The USA played the "lesser of two evils" game and, imagine that, ended up siding with evil. This "long understanding" is a modern myth for when Hussein became unpopular with OPEC for wanting to sell oil too cheaply to pay off Iraq's debts. Not saying he was a good guy, but the USA didn't get involved in this mess out of the goodness of its heart.
