Parents have resources beyond scolding and short of corporal punishment. Privileges and allowances can be revoked. If that doesn't work, the parent can warn the child that the authorities will be brought in. If that doesn't work, they can in fact be brought in. Parents will naturally be reluctant to take this last step. It's so final. But if you're serious as a parent, and the conduct is seriously out of line, you have to be willing to put down red lines that if crossed have serious consequences. And the kids have to know, from experience, that you always go through with any promised consequences.
