I grew up in an abusive "home", ran for my life, joined Army Intelligence, married, had a family, divorced my child-abusing husband, and made a life for my family. But childhood rheumatic fever caused so much damage that I literally died; resulting oxygen deprivation caused short-term memory loss to the point I'm useless to anyone. I receive a small SS payment, a minimal amount of food stamps, and my Medicare paid by the state. Help came too late for me. Yes, there's a lot of fraud and abuse, but please don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Watch out for those who come to the welfare office with designer handbags and loads of jewelry. Trust me-- there are plenty of scammers out there; we don't need to advertise for them.
