That's just silly. Various pioneering individuals did those things. The church was a huge power structure. Until religion became voluntary, the church was like government: everything it "gave" was based on what it TOOK from others in the first place. Prior to the end of forced religion, all of the resources that allowed the things you describe to happen would have been available to individuals in a free market, traded freely to raise living standards. Instead, the churches became the largest landholders, with the largest, most lavish buildings...
