I have pushed this idea for several years because marriage is a faith contract endorsed by people's church of choice. The gov't should only be involved in guaranteeing legal rights of couples. Most of us have gotten married in our church because it is a religious institution. As Ben points out, we will save the institution of marriage if gov't gets out of the business because we will let the churches we belong to sanction our union. All churches will sanction marriages that fit their fath beliefs while every couple will get a civil contract that the gov't recognizes in support of the legal rights that go along with the contract.
