No, what got us to where we are is the idea that we somehow make every kid can be made to succeed in a culture that doesn't work for success. We keep dumbing down standards and giving everyone a participation trophy for just showing up. We live in a culture that doesn't value education, and then we blame teachers when little Johnny can't read. We can't assign homework anymore because not everyone has a home environment they can work in. Students are not expected to take personal responsibility for what they do, But we can throw in a state-mandated test and force teachers to teach to it in order to keep their jobs. There are no easy answers, I know, but a federal one-size-fits-all solution is certainly not it.
