I think McRel is better than CCSS. But what frightens me is that a common set of standards removes local control. I am in one of the largest districts in Florida. I would argue that the larger the education behemoth becomes, the less freedom will be given to individual teachers. CCSS may be fine in and of itself, but I fear it becomes a leviathan we can't escape, compounded by the educational bureaucracies at the state and county level. When you have 10,000 teachers to keep track of, you can't trust them to choose for themselves what to teach. At a private school, where the principal is down the hall, you can. I just fear the collectivization of education, and CCSS will be the hammer. States and county bureaucracies will be the sickle.
