I was a full-time substitute for nearly two full years. During that time, I became close with many teachers who were, for the most part, decent, hard-working people. I was in my mid-30's and had extensive prior experience in the private sector. I was shocked by how often, and how vehemently, so many of the teachers complained about their compensation. I also noticed how many of those teachers who complained never had any real experience in any profession EXCEPT teaching. It was as if they all assumed that if they wanted to, they could easily step into a private-sector job with a much bigger paycheck (and less work load!) Their ignorance of the private sector was pitiful and alarming.
