My sisters and I came as foreign students from China thirty some years ago to California. Since we were here legally, we were not entitled to most grants and scholarships. My dad had a middle class income but not wealthy. When we came, our dad told us that this is a one-way ticket. We could not come here to squander the money and returned home empty handed. To paid for the out-of-state tuitions, we worked weekends and holidays to make up for the tuition our dad was able to send us. The was no plan B. Funny thing is: When there is no safety net, you will find a way to solve your problem. I believe social safety net is important but it cannot be too cushy especially for those young and able.
