In this day and age, a student can earn a degree in English without ever studying Shakespeare. He/she can earn a degree in English by studying such nonsense as Michael Jackson's lyrics or deconstructing Twain in terms of racial and gender frameworks. Do not kid yourself despite the mandate under NCLB that each teacher should be "qualified" by holding a degree in the subject he/she teaches is meaningless especially in regard to the humanities. What satisfies degree requirements would appall the public. Therefore, your contention that parents are not qualified to teach holds little water. Many of the teachers who teach are not qualified despite the fact they hold valid teaching credentials.
