Film critic Michael Medved did a study a few years back where he compared how much money a movie made, and then analyzed these by rating. By every measure, G and PG-rated movies made more than R and NC-17. They made more on average. More of them were in the top money-makers. They had higher gross ticket sales and they had higher net ticket sales. Etc. And yet Hollywood consistently makes more R movies than G movies. Sure, they want to make money. But Hollywood producers are people of principle more than they are greedy. The are willing to lose money if that's what it takes to stand up for what they believe in. And what they believe in is free sex, gay rights, hatred of Christianity, liberal politics, etc.
