I agree that history is a slaughter bench and nature is red of tooth and claw. This is the reality of things. But the macro, and our scientific knowledge in general, although an evolving field of study, guides us towards the rational order. THAT order is, by definition, unchanging. Will we ever find the sweetspot, where our knowledge squares and there is no further evolution? Maybe. Maybe not. Pragmatics intervene as a kind of act of faith. We have to take short-cuts in our thinking. That is why it is important for faith to serve rationality, for faith to serve knowledge, and not the other way around.
