Years ago I read Bill Donahue. He wrote that if things got really bad, depression or hyperinflation, then everyone will get whacked, including you and I. But you and I can do some things so that we don't get whacked quite as badly as the rest.
For depression Bill Donahue recommended gilt-edged and/or government bonds. Given the state of Stockton CA's (example) finances, I am not so sure. I recommend learning skills such as home and auto repair, and mending clothes, etc., that can be traded for other things.
