I've seen this political theater at least ten times (just on the federal level) during my lifetime. In EVERY CASE, with NOT ONE SINGLE EXCEPTION, the phony argument was about REDUCING THE PROPOSED RATE OF SPENDING INCREASE. It was NOT about actually CUTTING any program. Observe the curious unity of Republicans and Democrats. Republicans tend to shriek that REDUCING THE INCREASE in alleged "defense" spending will result in world chaos. Democrats shriek that REDUCING THE INCREASE in welfare spending will cause riots in the streets, and force grandma to eat cat food. Then, the two parties reach a "compromise": They BOTH agree to INCREASE spending on ALL PROGRAMS. A pox on both their houses.
