"What do these groups have in common? Nothing." On the contrary, they have several things in common. The rich need the poor to feel good about themselves. The poor need the rich to look up to. Both classes agree that the poor should vote for rich politicians, who should generously give the poor other people's money. Both classes detest those other people, the middle class. "Middle class" is itself a derogatory term to them, but they have a long list of others -- bourgeois, nouveau riche, Philistine, uppity, climber, blood-sucker, pig. . . The poor hate the middle class out of open envy; the rich, out of secret fear. Above all, sixth-generation welfare recipients and trust-fund babies alike hate everyone who's bettered himself through work.
