No, I could see an argument that they were attacking the US because of past grievances, occupation on the Arabian peninsula, Israel, etc. These are all arguments Al-Qaeda has made. I have yet to read them refer to themselves as freedom fighters. That was used by the Reagan administration for the Contras. Then picked up by liberals and used for a variety of groups.
