There can be such a thing as too much ideological purity. A deep red conservative can't get elected in a state like New Jersey. Even liberal-leaning republicans who are well liked and have good approval ratings, like Scott Brown, as the last election showed, have at best a limited ability to stay in office in deep blue territory. And your solution is to exclude republicans who can? When the ONLY alternative is a very liberal democrat? That's called cutting off your nose to spite your face.
