Sorry to blow your Southern strategy theory out of the water but George Wallace and Robt Byrd are just two examples of the racist democrats that stayed with the party following Nixon's Southern strategy. The Southern strategy wasn't to bring in the racist, they stayed with the democrats, but to bring in business interest in the South that was startting to boom. Add to that business message the message of law and order and many Southerns came into the Republican party but the KKK members and other racist stayed with the democrats because they didn't want law and order established by the Federal Gov't.
