Washington's motto was, "For God and My Country." Therein lies the man. He knew that only the divine hand of Providence could secure the survival of his army and the sacred end of freedom to which they had all sacrificed so much. Heaven affixed the seal of fate to our nation’s birth and her people’s liberty because a man like Washington had the heart and sublime constancy to love God and his country above all. Biographer Samuel Drake sums it up: “In every dark hour Washington’s star shone out bright and unsullied by any taint of personal ambition, nor could any sense of personal wrong turn him a hair’s breath from the path of duty. His was a great, a magnanimous soul."
